About The Arlington Rotary Educational Foundation

The Arlington Rotary Educational Foundation (AREF) was established as a Virginia non-stock corporation in 1958.   The members of the Foundation are the active members of the Arlington Rotary Club. AREF has been recognized by the IRS as a tax-exempt 501(c)(3) public charity (tax ID number 54-6046295).

AREF provides scholarship assistance to graduates of Arlington Virginia high schools.  For many years, we have awarded a grant of $8,000, spread over 8 college semesters, to a deserving high school senior selected by our Board on a competitive basis from among applications received.  Thus at any given time four students are studying with the help of AREF scholarships.  As of April 2016, our awardees are studying at St. Andrews Univeristy (Scotland), Yale University, James Madison University, and Virginia Commonwealth University.

In July 2013, the Foundation initiated the Arlington Rotary Challenge Grant, subsequently re-named the Arlington Rotary American Challenge Stipend in memory of Audra Rafter.  This award is aimed at enabling one deserving graduate of the Arlington Mill alternative high school  to complete two years's study at Northern Virginia Community College, as the availability of qualified candidates and funding makes possible. Applicants for the stipend are competitively selected by the Arlington Mill High School.  Our fourth annual award of the Challenge Grant was made on April 21, 2016.

AREF is also the funding arm for other charitable works of the Arlington Rotary Club, both local and international.  Last year for example we supported the Arlington Food Assistance Center; the Arlington Academy of Hope (School in Uganda); HomeStretch; a village electrification project in Haiti; tornado disaster relief in Tappahannock County, Virginia; and other projects.
Want to help support our work in the community and around the world?  We welcome your tax-deductible contributions.  Please use the "Donate" button at the top of this page.  Under "instructions to seller" you can indicate how you want your donation to be applied, for example, "education," "international," "health/hunger," "families," etc. - or leave blank and we'll apply it where most needed.  You can also indicate in that space if your gift is in honor of (iho) or in memory of (imo) someone.

The Arlington Rotary Educational Foundation is a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit charitable organization, IRS Tax ID 54-6046295.  Donations (less consideration received) are deductible to the full extent of applicable law.
