Wine Helps, now in its third year, is the Arlington Rotary Club’s effort to create a unique, fun event that will help raise funds to meet needs in our community. Each year, we select a deserving, effective non-profit community service organization which will receive a large portion of the funds we raise.
Funds raised beyond our target amount for the “featured charity” also go 100% to support other good causes such as our Arlington Rotary Educational Foundation, which provides two different types of scholarships to students graduating from Arlington high schools, incidental funds to bolster Arlington school-related programs (science, athletics), or local organizations like the Arlington Academy of Hope or Arlington Food Assistance Center. Arlington Rotary adds zero overhead!
This year, we have chosen Doorways for Women and Children as our Featured Charity. Doorways creates pathways out of homelessness, domestic violence and sexual assault leading to safe, stable and empowered lives. Learn more below, or go to https://www.doorwaysva.org.
For most of us, the word “home” conjures images of warmth, happiness and a sense of belonging. But what if the only place you had to call home was where someone was causing you and your children harm? What if home didn’t exist at all, and the only way to keep your children off the street was to sleep in a car or beg friend after friend for a couch? These situations affect more Arlingtonians than you might imagine.
The Doorways Model
Doorways for Women and Families envisions a day when all people in our community live free of violence and have safe and stable housing. Our goal is that every family that walks through our door walks through another – into a safe home of their own. Since 1978, we have given thousands of our neighbors a pathway out of violence and homelessness and empowered them to create brighter futures.
We understand that the causes of family homelessness, domestic violence and sexual assault are profound and varied. Many of our clients have experienced just one of these issues, while others have faced all three. Doorways works to break the cycles of poverty and violence through every interaction we have with our clients and by advocating for systemic policy change. We are successful because we treat each person as an individual, tailoring our programs and services to help every adult and child we serve overcome trauma, build life skills and ultimately unlock their full potential. From immediate crisis intervention to counseling, housing and employment support, we offer real options and multiple pathways to build brighter futures.

Once again, we will be able to try Cabot Creamery Cooperative's great cheese. Cabot says: "Our farms and the towns they surround have been connected for a long time. Many of our families have been working their land for generations. We’re proud to be rooted in our communities. So that’s why we open our farms up and celebrate with friends, neighbors, and whoever else wants to stop by. That’s why we hand out cheese at events and grill up meals for volunteers. That’s why we teach kids all about fresh food and the importance of farms."
Finish with a good Dessert! Sweets and treats from Lidl donated by Torsten Lubach.
Back by popular demand: The Boaté & Ajluni Duo.
Tim Boaté and Anthony Ajluni have been playing music together since they met in 2012, while attending the University of Maryland. Their friendship is rooted in a shared love of a playing guitar, and a diverse list of music heroes ranging from Django Reinhardt to Wes Montgomery, Paul Simon, Tommy Emmanuel, The Grateful Dead, The Beatles, Stevie Wonder and many others. Together, they present a versatile yet distinct sound; crafting beautiful instrumental acoustic renditions ranging from pop classics, to folk, bluegrass, jazz, bossa, gypsy and more.
